Alaska Gold Rush History and Genealogy

Most mining camps that existed for long had a cemetary of some sort. The location of many of those graveyards has been lost to time. Alaska’s cemeteries with Gold rush era graves have often not been kept up as they are usually in remote parts of the state where there are few or no people nearby. If people are in the area they are likely no relation to those buried there and have little reason to look after the graves. The original markers were commonly made of wood which hasn't’t survived the ravages of Alaska’s weather. In some places depressions in the ground may be all that remain to indicate a cemetery was there and the names of those laid to rest are lost forever.
