Evansville is located about 250 trail miles or 180 air miles northwest of Fairbanks, near Bettles.

The community was named for Wilford Evans, Sr. who ran a trading post and river barge business in Allakaket. He opened a sawmill where Evansville is now located and also built a lodge and store.
