1915-1916 Polk Directory: Dempsey. Pop 100. A P O and mining settlement n the Chistochina river and Daley creek, 210 miles n of Valdez, the nearest banking and shipping point and 105 mi n of Copper Center. Gold and copper are found along the river and tributaries. Mail monthly from Valdez.
The settlement was named after Melvin Dempsey who was of African and Cherokee ancestry. He was a merchant, gold prospector and the postmaster of this mining camp (Source).
