DeVane, Harvey Moore Son of Thomas. He was born in Ruby on May 1st, 1912 and lived there until about 1920 when his parents separated. DeVane, Thomas Jones (Tom) (Image #25) Registered for the WW1 draft circa 1917-18 in Ruby. Born 22 Jan 1887 W Centerville NC. Ruby storekeeper 1929-31 (source P 52). Bought NC Co. store after '31 flood. Was bought out by NC Co. in 1939. 1933 (Source P 121). Operated the Ruby Telegraph Company that linked Ruby to the outside. He was in the Army Signal Corps and had been previously stationed at Fort Gibbon and Melozi. He and a partner strung the miles of cable to connect to Ruby. He later bought the store in Ruby and at some point also had stores in Kokrines and Poorman. About 1920 he and some business associates brought in a herd of reindeer along with Lapland herders.
